Entrance Mat Maintenance

Many of our custom entrance matting customers e-mail or call us asking about what is the best way to maintain their custom entrance mats to receive the maximum life wear! Our primary response is daily vacuuming if mats are positioned in the building interior. Use a broom or power blower on exterior entrance mats. Setting up a scheduled entrance mat cleaning program for both interior and exterior custom entrance mats and you will definitely extend the life wear. Most of our customers truly admire our handsome workmanship or just love our gorgeous colors, so they sometimes forget the real function of our custom logomats. You must remember the true purpose of entrance rugs/mats is to trap dirt and moisture from scattering into your building. Thus, if an entrance mat is really doing its job, doesn't it make sense that your entrance matting will get soiled and needs to be cleaned on a timely basis.

Deep cleaning should be completed on a serious monthly schedule with water, using a variety of applications, depending on the entrance mat product. We will discuss specific stain removal later in this bulletin.

What works best?

Hercules Mat Products. It is essential to vacuum daily. If a Hercules Mat is placed in an external application, use blower or sweep off. If your Hercules entrance mat is positioned inside, roll it up on the transport core provided when the mat was shipped to you (keep the core) and take it outside and pressure wash at no more than 70 PSI. This forces grit particles our of the middle of the polypropolene fabric. Let the entrance mat dry for four hours and place back in service. But what if you have cold weather and can't do pressure washing? Use a hot water carpet extractor using warm water only. Doesn't have to be boiling hot, just warm to the touch. The extractor system will flush out sand/grit and revive mat surface. Let the entrance Hercules mat lay out for about four hours and return to service using transport core. The Hercules entrance mat does not absorb liquid stains into the fabric, however, you may see a surface liquid residue from drinks. This will flush out with water and doesn't leave any stain. It is not necessary to use any stain remover.

It is important to position mat cleaning on a regular maintenance schedule . . . weekly . . . monthly depending on foot traffic and weather conditions. With today's stain resistant fabric, treating spots and stains has never been easier. The key is to act quickly! The longer you wait, the higher the probability that a spill will become a permanent stain. How to treat spills! Blot liquid with a dry white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towel. (Don't use paper towels with prints or colors on them because of the possibility of color transfer.) Start at the outside of the spot and continue toward the center to prevent the stain from spreading. Continue to blot until the area is barely damp. If there are semi solids like a food spill, you may need to be scooped up with a spoon or maybe try a vacuum. Just a brief warning about scrubbing or using a brush. Scrubbing and brushes can damage nylon mat surface.

If you desire to use a spot or stain cleaner, be sure to use a water based CRI. Seal of Approval carpet cleaning product. Apply a small amount of the cleaner to a white cloth and work gently from the edge of the spot to the center. Blot, don't scrub. Remember, don't become overzealous.

The key to maximum life entrance mat wear is keeping a routine mat cleaning schedule.
